Softener repair and replacement

If the scale is coming back, the salt isn’t going down or the softener is running nonstop, the fix may be simple. Sometimes, though, replacing an old unit makes more sense.

Checks to try first

  • Make sure the bypass valve is in the service position
  • Confirm the unit has power and the clock is set after any outage
  • Look for a salt bridge, a hard crust above empty space in the tank
  • Check that the drain line isn’t kinked or frozen

Common failures

Hard water returningWorn resin, wrong settings or a higher hardness than it was set up for

Repair or replace?

A common rule of thumb is to think about replacing a softener when a repair approaches half the cost of a new one. Age counts too. Many units last 10 to 15 years, and parts for older or dealer-only brands can be hard to find. New units are often more efficient with salt and water. A fresh water test also shows if the old unit was ever sized properly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does softener repair cost?

Most repairs run $150–$1,000, according to national cost guides. Control valve replacement and resin rebedding sit toward the higher end.

What does replacement cost?

A new softener typically costs $1,200–$3,800 installed. Reusing existing plumbing connections can sometimes make the work simpler.

Can the provider service any brand?

Not always, particularly with proprietary dealer brands. Share the make and model when you call so they can tell you up front.

Does softener resin wear out?

Yes. Resin gradually loses capacity, and iron or chlorine can shorten its life. Replacing it can be a cost-effective repair if the valve is still sound.
